An inflatable membrane roof (also called pneumatic or air-supported membrane structure) is a roof system where pressurized internal air creates structural rigidity by pressurizing flexible membrane materials. Unlike conventional tensioned membrane roofs that rely on pre-tensioned cable systems, this system depends on a controlled positive pressure differential to maintain shape and support loads.
Air-Inflated Membrane Structure (also known as Air Dome Structure) is an innovative lightweight building system that forms large-span column-free spaces by utilizing air pressure difference between inside and outside. It integrates high-strength membrane materials with intelligent inflation systems, offering fast construction, cost-effectiveness, flexible space utilization and environmental protection. With only 1/50 the weight of traditional concrete buildings, it reduces construction time by 70% and energy consumption by 30%-50%, widely used in sports venues, logistics warehouses, environmental protection closed yards, exhibition centers, emergency rescue facilities and cultural tourism projects.
The membrane is the primary material for air-inflated structures, typically made of PVDF or PTFE, offering excellent tensile strength and durability. It can be single-layer or double-layer, depending on thermal insulation, light transmission, and structural requirements.
Anchoring systems and steel cables enhance structural stability, safety, and service life. Concrete anchoring methods are determined based on overall building dimensions, site conditions, and load requirements.
A diffuse (glare-free) lighting system guides light to the inner membrane for uniform distribution. Natural light from top lighting belts reduces energy consumption by over 30% compared to traditional direct lighting.

Typical Materials
PTFE-coated fiberglass (Teflon-coated glass fibre)
Excellent thermal resistance (continuous service up to ~+260°C), UV and weather resistance, low surface energy for “self-cleaning”, long service life and high dimensional stability. Typical tensile strengths vary by product but can reach several hundred to over one thousand N/5cm depending on weight and weave.
PVC/PVDF-coated polyester (often with PVDF finish)
Economical, colourable/printable, good waterproofing and fire-retardant formulations; PVDF topcoat significantly improves UV and long-term durability. Typical design life 15–25 years under normal exposure when correctly detailed and maintained.
ETFE foil (single layer or cushion)
Very light, high transparency for daylighting — used when visual/lighting performance is required.
